A Word file someone can keep editing.
Download gives you a .docx written by the same writer the desktop app uses for Export Wordβ¦, compiled into this page. Headings come out as Word's Heading 1 to 6, paragraphs as Body Text, and lists as Word's own numbered and bulleted lists, so the person you send it to works on it like any other document.
The panel lists what the file is made of: the styles its paragraphs wear and the objects it holds, counted by the engine from the document on the left.
Styles, not formatting
A converter that paints every heading bold and large leaves the recipient with a document that only looks structured. Here each heading carries a named style with its outline level, so the navigation pane shows the outline, a table of contents can be built from the headings, and changing Heading 2 once changes every heading 2. Code is set in Source Code, quotations in Quote, and tables share one table style whose header row repeats on each page.
Lists, footnotes and links
A list written from 3. begins at 3. Task items keep their boxes as β and β. Footnotes become Word footnotes at the foot of the page, external links stay clickable, and a link to a heading inside the document becomes a link to a bookmark on that heading.
Equations stay equations
Math written between $ signs or in a $$ block is converted to Office Math, the format Word's own equation editor writes. It arrives as an equation the recipient can click into and change, not as a picture of one.
Pictures and paper
Pictures are fetched from where the document points at the moment you download, and embedded in the file. One this page cannot reach β a path on your own disk, or a server that does not share its images with other sites β goes in as its alternative text, and the notice says how many. The paper is A4 or US Letter, from the panel; a paper line in the document's front matter takes precedence, along with its orientation and margins, and the front matter's title becomes the document's title.
Nothing leaves the tab
The writer is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in this page. Your Markdown is not uploaded, and there is no account. The only requests the page makes for it are for the pictures the document already shows. Close the tab and the document stays in this browser only.
